SSC Stenographer Grade C and Grade D is a central government recruitment for stenographers (आशुलिपिक) in ministries and offices. The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) runs it every year through ssc.gov.in. For the 2026 cycle, applications ran from 24 April to 15 May 2026 for about 1,275 tentative vacancies, and the computer-based exam (CBE) was held from 9 to 15 September 2026, according to news reports (September 2026).
As of 15 October 2026 we could not confirm whether the answer key or the result has been released. This page explains the status honestly, what usually comes next, and how to prepare for the skill test. We are an independent guide, not SSC. Always check ssc.gov.in.

Our research could not open ssc.gov.in directly, and we found no reliable report of the answer key or result for this cycle. So we are not giving any date. If someone tells you the steno result is "out" or gives a fixed date, open ssc.gov.in yourself and check the notice section.
The vacancy figure is tentative. SSC can revise vacancies later in a cycle, so the final number may change.
Eligibility (2025 cycle as a guide)
We could not read the 2026 notice. The 2025 notice, as reported by Careers360 (6 June 2025), gives a good idea of the rules. Check the 2026 notice for the exact figures.
- Qualification: 12th pass on or before the cut-off date (1 August 2025 in that cycle).
- Age: Grade C 18 to 30 years; Grade D 18 to 27 years, as on 1 August 2025.
- Fee: Rs 100. Women, SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen are exempt.
- Vacancies: 261 in the 2025 cycle, so the reported 1,275 for 2026 is a big jump.
The main practical difference between the two grades in the notice is the age limit. Grade C has a higher upper age limit, so older candidates may only be eligible for Grade C. For other 12th-pass options, see our 12th pass government jobs page.
How selection works: CBE then skill test
- Computer-based exam (CBE): an objective test held online at exam centres. Your CBE marks decide whether you are called for the skill test.
- Answer key: SSC usually puts up a provisional answer key and your response sheet after the exam, with a short window for objections.
- CBE result: a list of candidates shortlisted for the stenography skill test.
- Skill test: a test of shorthand (स्टेनोग्राफी). The notice says how it counts towards selection.
- Document verification and final result: after the skill test, followed by allotment of departments.
The skill test is about taking dictation in shorthand and then transcribing it on a computer within a set time. The dictation speed, the transcription time and the allowed error limits for Grade C and Grade D are fixed in the notice. We could not verify the 2026 figures, so read the skill test section of the 2026 notice on ssc.gov.in rather than trusting numbers in videos.
Answer key and objection fee
When SSC releases a provisional answer key, you log in at ssc.gov.in, view your response sheet and can challenge answers you think are wrong. In recent SSC exams the fee has been Rs 50 per question challenged, according to news reports from 2026 (for example the Selection Post Phase 14 key in October 2026). It was Rs 100 per question in 2024. The window is short, often a few days, and closes at a fixed time.
Before you pay, check the answer in a standard textbook and make sure you are challenging the right question number in your own shift. Our answer key objection guide explains the steps.
Preparing for the steno skill test now
The gap between the CBE and the skill test is your best preparation time. Even before the result:
- Practise dictation daily at a steady speed, then transcribe on a computer, not on paper.
- Practise in the language you chose in the form, Hindi or English, because you are tested in that language.
- For Hindi, practise on the keyboard layout allowed in the notice.
- Time your transcription and count your errors as the notice describes.
If you also prepare for state typing-based posts, note that a typing test is different from a steno test. For example, UP's Junior Assistant uses a typing test; see our UPSSSC Junior Assistant page.
ssc.gov.in login, photo and admit card
SSC moved from ssc.nic.in to ssc.gov.in in 2024, and all candidates had to make a fresh One-Time Registration (OTR) on the new site (Careers360). Your OTR registration number and password are what you need for admit cards, answer keys and results.
The SSC application module captures your photo live through a webcam or phone camera instead of an upload, according to Careers360 (February 2024). Keep a plain background and do not wear a cap, mask or spectacles. For signature files, use our photo and signature resizer and check the size given in the notice. For skill test call letters, follow our admit card download guide.
UPSSSC and other state stenographer posts
Many people searching "stenographer vacancy" are looking for state posts, such as UPSSSC Stenographer in Uttar Pradesh. Those are separate recruitments with their own syllabus, typing rules and dates. We have no verified current UPSSSC stenographer notice or syllabus to share, so check upsssc.gov.in directly. Ignore paid "syllabus PDF" offers from unknown numbers, and read our fake job alert guide.
Questions and answers
SSC steno result 2026 kab aayega?
SSC has not given a result date that we could confirm. The computer-based exam was held 9 to 15 September 2026. Usually the answer key comes first, then the CBE result with the skill test shortlist. Check the notice section of ssc.gov.in instead of trusting dates on social media.
Is the SSC stenographer answer key out?
We could not confirm it as of 15 October 2026. Log in at ssc.gov.in with your OTR registration number and check the answer key notice. If it is out, you can view your response sheet and challenge answers. In recent SSC exams the fee was Rs 50 per question challenged.
How many vacancies are there in SSC stenographer 2026?
About 1,275 tentative vacancies, according to news reports from September 2026. The 2025 cycle had 261. Tentative figures can be revised later by SSC, so the final number may differ. The official vacancy table will be on ssc.gov.in.
What is the steno skill test?
It is a shorthand test. You take dictation in shorthand and then transcribe it on a computer in a fixed time. Only candidates who clear the CBE are called. The speed, time and error limits for Grade C and D are in the notice, so read that section on ssc.gov.in.
What is the age limit for SSC stenographer?
In the 2025 cycle, Grade C was 18 to 30 years and Grade D was 18 to 27 years, as on 1 August 2025, according to Careers360. The 2026 notice was not readable to us. Check its age section, including relaxations for reserved categories, on ssc.gov.in.
Stenographer vacancy ke liye kya qualification chahiye?
For SSC Stenographer the qualification in the 2025 cycle was 12th pass by the cut-off date. Shorthand skill is tested later in the skill test, so start practising early. State stenographer posts may have different rules, so read each notice.
